How We Started

The history of mariachi at Austin Soundwaves dates back to 2015 when we were first invited to perform for the Viva Mexico event in September of that year. From there it grew to a formal afterschool program, student participants numbering 20 and more. We performed with a flexible instrumentation and no students were turned away. Many students had a history of playing mariachi in their families and many more were playing mariachi for the first time.

We formally renamed the group Mariachi Amozoc, after a region in Mexico where we drew a lot of our music. Amozoc performed in locations throughout Austin, including the Long Center, UT-Austin, and schools in the district, as well as in San Antonio and Houston.
