Use your voice to oppose Austin ISD's cuts to elementary arts

March 8, 2022

Dear arts advocates,

The recent Austin Independent School District proposal to make cuts in arts learning at elementary schools starting next school year should be a cause for great concern for students, teachers, school leaders, and families. Under AISD’s proposed plan, arts learning suffers a 20% reduction of classroom minutes and 22 fewer class meeting sessions. Arts learning supports the whole child, with research backing improved academic outcomes, social-emotional learning, critical thinking skills, and growth mindset.

We need your voice and energy. We need to work together to ensure AISD neither cuts the number of arts minutes nor the number of weekly arts classes. The board of trustees will meet on March 10th and we need all arts advocates to:

  1. Call in for public comment between 7:45am and 3pm at (512) 414-0130

  2. Email the trustees at trustees@austinisd.org and your district contacts

  3. Share this post on social media

Let the board know that there are better ways to give teachers planning time and any reduction to arts learning will not help our students succeed. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or ways we can help. We are grateful for your advocacy.

Sincerely,
Patrick Slevin
Executive Director
