Mariachi Para Todos on KMFA FM 89.5
We're so proud to announce that Mariachi Para Todos, our intergenerational mariachi ensemble, will be on the radio! They will be featured this week on KMFA FM 89.5, Austin's independent classical music station, during Staccato with host Judlyne Lilly-Gibson on Wednesday at 11am, Friday at 3pm, and New Year's Day at 10am.
(Shout-out to Austin Soundwaves teaching artist and Mariachi Para Todos director Javier Salinas for his excellent interview on the show!)
Mariachi has been an important part of Austin Soundwaves since 2015, when we first performed with a group of students at the Viva Mexico! festival. And like many of our in-person offerings, we paused meeting during the pandemic. We were grateful to receive funding in April 2021 from the National Guild for Arts Education and Lifetime Arts to restart mariachi as an intergenerational ensemble and program, with participants ranging in age from 14 to 55 years and up.
This year alone, Mariachi Para Todos has performed as part of our Season Finale, in special performances at The Village on the Triangle, with the UT-Austin Voces Oral History Center, and as the special guest at our partner program's winter finale. PLUS - we're always looking for new members! Like all of our community programs, participation is 100% free. Please email us at info@austinsoundwaves.org for more information.
