Partnership Spotlight: Austin Independent School District

We're excited about our continued partnership with the Austin Independent School District, supporting both the students and the directors to help the great work already happening at each campus to make music learning accessible and equitable. Whether it's Ms. Cecilia working with the mariachi violins at Bedichek middle school or our teaching artists working directly with Northeast High School orchestra and Eastside Early College High School band, it's amazing to see such tremendous growth despite the challenges of the last year and a half.

Our teaching artists lead sectionals and private lessons at these schools as well as Anderson High School and Martin Middle School. In addition, our Austin Soundwaves education managers collaborate with and provide resources for each partner band, orchestra, or mariachi director. We also work closely with Ortega Elementary and Blackshear Fine Arts Academy, leading beginning classes in 5th-grade orchestra and music skills.

We've raised $9,025.94 so far!

Without people like you or Layla, our mission could not be possible, and creating possibilities is an integral part of our work. We're thankful that despite the challenges of this year, 2021 brought many tangible moments of opportunity, such as (to name just a few):

  • presenting a Season Finale concert safely at the outdoor Texas Big Top Tent with Texas Performing Arts;

  • starting and performing concerts with our first-ever intergenerational ensemble in Mariachi Para Todos;

  • performing our DMFP capstone concert live at KMFA's Draylen Mason Music Studio for the first time;

  • partnering with 8 new schools to provide community programming;

  • serving 219 more students (651 total) throughout the Austin area

  • returning safely to 100% live and in-person teaching at all 14 of our in-school partners across the city;

  • taking our 10 Draylen Mason fellows to see the Broadway hit Hamilton live at Bass Concert Hall;

  • hearing the new stories of 43 alumni completing another semester after high school through our monthly meetups;

  • working with 118 seniors as they head toward graduation and beyond;

  • ...and so much more!
