Austin Soundwaves' Private Lesson Program (PLP)
During the 2021-2022 school year, Austin Soundwaves worked with Austin ISD’s Visual and Performing Arts department to provide one-on-one music lessons to 44 middle and high school students across four campuses through our Private Lesson Program (PLP). We used this opportunity to study the impact lessons can have on students.
These weekly, one-on-one lessons through PLP took place during their music class times, and they worked with the same experienced Austin Soundwaves teaching artists over the year of the pilot project. One-on-one lessons allow us to develop deep relationships with individuals and help create student leaders within music programs in the district.
Our students described their participation in PLP as fun, challenging, interesting, and helpful. At the end of the year, 91% of students felt they improved as a result of their lessons, and 89% said they would like to continue lessons.
This year, we are working with 73 middle and high school students in 11 school band and orchestra programs through PLP. We look forward to expanding opportunities to work with students individually and increase our impact through programs like PLP (and so many others like it at Austin Soundwaves) in the coming months. Your support can help us serve more of the over 207 students who applied to be part of the Private Lesson Program as soon as next year.
