During the 2021-2022 school year, Austin Soundwaves worked with Austin ISD’s Visual and Performing Arts department to provide one-on-one music lessons to 44 middle and high school students across four campuses through our Private Lesson Program (PLP). We used this opportunity to study the impact lessons can have on students.

We have enjoyed partnering with Cecilia Calvelo and Webb Middle School this year! Austin Soundwaves had the wonderful opportunity of having Cecilia as part of our teaching staff as a violin teaching artist and summer camp director. Cecilia now works at Webb Middle School, teaching guitar and orchestra, and our team has enjoyed supporting her in this new role.

William (pictured right with his wife, Linda) played this trombone in middle and high school, ultimately earning first chair in the regional band. He eventually passed his trombone onto his son Matthew when he joined band in middle school. Matthew was later surprised with a new trombone that he used in the marching band during all four years of high school in Pflugerville. The family donated both William and Matthew's trombones to Austin Soundwaves in October.

Next week, Austin Soundwaves and KMFA Classical 89.5 kick off Fall Into Music, Austin's ongoing instrument initiative, with a week of highlighting stories of the 3,000+ instruments donated since 2013. Between October 31 and November 4, we will share the origin stories of these instruments, testimonies from students using donated instruments, and other ways you can help make music learning accessible and equitable.

On this day in 2011, our small but mighty organization was founded on the belief that more opportunities to learn music were needed in our community. Thank you to all the families that came out to Pease Park for a beautiful morning of music this weekend! We kicked off the morning with a performance by our lead teaching artists at the ground level of the Pease Park treehouse. It was great to see many of the children in attendance dancing to some of the performances, especially We Don’t Talk About Bruno, from Disney’s Encanto.
